Artist Statement
Life is lived in little moments and often it’s the smallest ones, the quiet hum of the unflashy, that carry the most meaning and are the most deeply remembered. This small stuff matters; its power is in its insignificance. Easy to ignore, overlook or trivialize, fleeting fragments, moments and happenstance observations form threads, connective tissue holding richness. Beneath the curated surface of our lives is the unpolished, and raw, the parts that we may be reluctant to own are, in fact, common denominators. We all have ordinary moments, patterns, whispers, imperfections. This is what I paint.
At their core, my paintings are a series of visual field notes drawn from my life. I excavate and gather moments, capturing snippets of everyday life, the mundane and the bits we try to hide from others and ourselves. These seemingly unremarkable moments when examined, provide context, a rich backdrop, a narrative to our lives. We are all composed of these backstories and we are all connected because of them. After all, humans have always been storytellers, it is our universal mother tongue. Myths and fairy tales tell of human existence, with adversities and demonstrations of courage. But they also include human faults, flaws, and failures. These universal stories anchor us, graft us together and bridge our differences, resonating with us because they reflect the narratives we tell ourselves.
My paintings are life compasses, maps and symbols revealing interior roads and guide posts. I uncover the stories that hide in the details of everyday life – what belongs, what’s missing and what holds everything together. When you look into my painted world, you might find that part of my stories are also yours.
